Just Awarded…New Cultural Center at Stony Brook University

Stony Brook University has experienced a dramatic increase in student enrollment, that brought with it a much more culturally diverse community as well. The graduating Class of 2018 was the largest and most diverse in the University’s history, boasting graduates from 43 states and 73 countries; ranging in age from 18 to 77.

With such growing diversity, the University carved out 3,500 square feet of empty shell space within the Student Union Center — currently under renovation — to relocate the UNITI Cultural Center (United Nationalities in Transcending Ideologies) into larger space that celebrates and embraces ethic authenticity and connects the human spirit:

“There must be spaces, places and experiences on campus  that help students know and feel that they belong here  and are part of the larger community”

- Cheryl Chambers, Associate Dean and Director of Multicultural Affairs

The new UNITI Cultural Center will host diversity and multicultural programs, social discourse, academic and experiential learning, support services, and advocacy. It will be prominently positioned on the first floor of the Stony Brook Union, facing the internal atrium, with a welcoming glass entrance and foyer area. Various cultural themes will permeate the living room, lounge, conference areas, offices, work rooms, as well as the art gallery and studio through the furnishings, fixtures, artwork and wall graphics.
