Cobbs Creek Blanche A. Nixon Library

With the help of the Cobbs Creek community, the preservation and rehabilitation of the historical library transformed it into a modern and accessible community center that meets the evolving needs of the neighborhood.

The Cobbs Creek/ Blanche A. Nixon Library in Philadelphia was built in 1925 and is one of the original 25 Carnegie libraries in the city. The library serves as a community center, offering space for events, as well as programming for children and teens.

The initial focus of the rehabilitation was the building envelope and systems; however, once DIG was given the ability to access the original drawings of the library, honoring the design history became a priority. DIG and The ROZ Group led a community engagement process to assess how the planned improvement could better serve the community. The updated building includes ADA-accessible ramps and restrooms, as well as new lighting, windows, interior finishes, furnishings, and mechanical and electrical systems. Outside, a redesign of the site improves circulation and accessibility, while incorporating new landscaping and program areas.
