Long Branch Free Public Library Renovations

DIG was entrusted to design renovations to restore the Carnegie Wing of the Main Library to its original grandeur, including interior upgrades, a new special collections room, new program spaces, and building system improvements.

This community anchor is set to undergo major renovations that include restoration of the original Carnegie wing, a new local history room, young adult space, community rooms, energy-efficient HVAC system, water-proofing upgrades, and a whole-building emergency generator. Officially opened in 1920, the Long Branch Free Public Library is believed to be the last Carnegie library built with funds awarded by Andrew Carnegie and the Carnegie Foundation.

Featured in the library’s core is an exhibition room of their local history collection. As the noteworthy vacation haven of seven US presidents, the City takes great pride in its place in history. Many of its patrons have contributed to this ever-expanding archive of local history. DIG introduced a display case wall enclosure to allow patrons to enjoy its exhibits even while the room is unattended. Its relocation to the core avoids exposure to daylight and serves as the hub of the building’s circulation.

The design phase was delivered on schedule, achieved through timely communication and a clear understanding of the client’s needs and goals.
Immediately prior to the construction award, the library was recognized as a 2023 recipient of the nation’s highest museum and library honor — National Medal for Museum and Library Service.
