Roosevelt Island Youth Center

This adaptive reuse project, under an on-call contract, involved the renovation of the first two floors of a 19-story residential tower into a Youth Center serving toddlers to young adults. The redesign includes a kitchen, garden patio, music room, computer room, game room, theater and office.

Originally designed as an elementary school in the 1970s, the renovations required new interior finishes, fixtures, replacement of existing lighting, plumbing, HVAC and security systems, ADA-compliant toilet rooms, and the replacement of doors, windows and curtainwall system. With a foundation constructed of poured concrete, the design addressed acoustical issues to insulate the space from the rest of the occupied building.

The design team applied for energy incentives available through ConEd for the upgraded lighting, HVAC systems and controls to help offset the cost of construction.
